Purpose & setup

Move forward as a pair after a short ball while keeping shared middle coverage.

A+B start behind the near baseline and C+D behind the far baseline. C has one ball to feed short into A’s near-left half. Use full doubles boundaries.

How to play

  1. C feeds a comfortable short ball to A. A approaches towards C while B moves forward alongside, staying in the other half.
  2. C returns a controlled passing ball. A and B split-step and call the next volley; C and D defend from the backcourt.
  3. Play out the point using volleys or one bounce. A net ball, out ball or second bounce ends it; no hard body feeds are used.
  4. After four points swap attacking and defending teams. Alternate the short-ball receiver A/B and corresponding feeder each point; finish the current point at time.

Scoring or success

One point for winning the rally. The attacking pair also records whether both reached balanced volley positions before the first defensive reply; that observation is separate from the point.

Rotation & roles

Swap attacking/defending roles every four points; both partners share the first approach on alternating attempts.

Make it easier

Defenders send only gentle middle returns and the attackers use broad volley targets.

Add a challenge

Defenders may choose controlled passing shots or lobs once both attackers are balanced.

Mixed levels

Use a closer starting position for a less mobile attacker and keep feed depth consistent.

Safety & spacing

Partners stay in separate halves and call middle balls. Turn for lobs rather than backpedalling, and stop if the pair’s forward routes intersect.
