Purpose & setup

Control an underspin groundstroke through a broad straight lane.

A and B stand at opposite service lines on the same half of the singles court. T is the far part of that lane. Start closer only if both can keep comfortable clearance over the net.

How to play

  1. A drop-feeds gently to B. B returns after one bounce using a controlled slice, then A does the same.
  2. Keep every return in the agreed half-court lane and give the partner a playable bounce. Do not try to skim the tape.
  3. A miss, second bounce or wrong lane ends the sequence. Reset before starting again.
  4. Alternate feeder every sequence. After five sequences switch lanes and finish the current sequence when time ends.

Scoring or success

Count consecutive in-lane slice returns, excluding the feed. Aim for four and then six, valuing control over low height.

Rotation & roles

Both switch lanes on dead balls after five sequences; alternate the feeder each time.

Make it easier

Allow a normal groundstroke return between slices or start with one slice followed by a catch.

Add a challenge

Move towards the baselines and keep the broad straight lane.

Mixed levels

Let the less experienced player use a normal groundstroke while the other practises slice; swap the focus when ready.

Safety & spacing

Use a comfortable racket path and keep a clear gap between players on each side. Stop for low balls beyond safe reach.
