Purpose & setup

Link a balanced groundstroke with a deliberate return to a useful starting position.

A starts just behind the near baseline with one ball. T is the middle third of the far backcourt, between the service line and baseline. The opposite court must be empty.

How to play

  1. Take two easy steps towards the deuce corner, drop the ball ahead, let it bounce once and drive it towards T.
  2. After the shot, recover to the centre mark before walking around the net to retrieve the ball.
  3. Repeat towards the ad corner with the appropriate groundstroke. Alternate corners for six attempts.
  4. Rest briefly after six attempts and continue. Do not hit another ball until the court is clear.

Scoring or success

One point for landing in T and one for a balanced recovery to the centre before retrieval. Count out of twelve per six-shot round.

Rotation & roles

Solo: alternate corners every attempt. Retrieval is a walking rest between shots, not a race.

Make it easier

Start nearer the service line and use the whole far singles backcourt.

Add a challenge

Use a smaller deep target while retaining a controlled finish.

Mixed levels

Not applicable: solo activity.

Safety & spacing

Use one ball, check the opposite court and leave clear walking routes around the net. Never swing while another person retrieves.

Follow the illustrated instructions. No video has been published for this activity.
